Cosmetic Dentistry

It is a branch of dentistry that deals with improving the appearance of a person's teeth, gums or bite. The main factors responsible for the dental appearance of a person are the color, position, shape, size, alignment and overall smile. It mainly involves the addition of a dental material to teeth or gums, removal of tooth structure and gums, teeth straightening, etc. For enhancing the whiteness of a tooth, "Tooth Whitening" is the most recommended cosmetic dental procedure. Teeth Whitening in Alta Loma is also referred to as tooth bleaching. This process can change the color of your tooth to a large extent, without any side effects, so the process is very common nowadays.

Apart from "Tooth bleaching", there is another procedure called Laser Whitening is which is trending now. This process starts with covering the gums with rubber, after which a bleaching chemical is applied on the tooth. The process lightens the color of the teeth six times as compared to the laser whitening technique.

Another procedure that comes under cosmetic dentistry is Tooth reshaping. In this process, some parts of the enamel are removed to improve the appearance of the tooth. This process is also known as enameloplasty, odontoblasts, contouring, recontouring, slenderizing, stripping. This process offers fast results and can even be substituted for braces under certain circumstances. Teeth can also be brought in shape by the process of bonding, in which a dental composite material is applied to a tooth's surface, sculpted into shape, hardened, and then polished.

Another examples of cosmetic dentistry include dental bridges (false teeth, known as a pontics, which are fused between two porcelain crowns to fill in areas left by missing teeth.), Veneers (an ultra-thin, custom-made porcelain laminates that are bonded directly to the teeth)., dental implants (prosthetic replacements for missing teeth), bite reclamation (gives patients, a closed or shorter look to their face and smile) and gum lift (a cosmetic dental procedure that raises and sculpts the gum line. The procedure also involves reshaping the tissue and/or underlying bones to create the appearance of longer or more symmetrical teeth).

In the past, dental fillings and other tooth restorations were made of gold, amalgam, and other metals—some of which were veneered with porcelain. Now, dental work can be made entirely of porcelain or composite materials that more closely mimic the appearance of natural tooth structure. These tooth-colored materials are bonded to the underlying tooth structure with resin adhesives. Unlike silver fillings (amalgams) they are entirely free of mercury. Cosmetic dentistry has evolved to cover many new procedures and new dental materials are constantly introduced.
