The Dental Health Checklist You Need for the Holidays

The Dental Health Checklist You Need for the Holidays

Tis the holiday season! The time when you eat to your heart’s content and still have room for more. The time when the table is never empty. The time when our tastebuds are more appeased than ever. Tis the holiday season!

While our appetite is the strongest, our teeth and gums get neglected. With all the sugary goodness and savory delicacies, we forget to consider their impact on oral health. And many a time, suffer the consequences later.

At Smile Select Dental, we want you to enjoy the holidays to the fullest and maintain your beautiful smile. Here is a checklist that will be your dental health guide this season.

  •  Make a routine. Stick to it religiously.

Holidays and routines don’t always go together, but for the sake of your teeth and gums, they have it. Brushing, flossing, and gargling twice daily must become an important part of your routine. Keeping the floss always handy is also wise during the holidays. You might become inclined to skip the oral routine after a late Thanksgiving dinner, but trust us when we say that you will regret it later.

Winters also make our teeth extra sensitive. So, it would be best if you use fluoride toothpaste. It has the ADA Seal of Acceptance, making it the perfect addition to your holiday routine.

  •  Befriend fruits and veggies, and beware of candies and cookies.

Everywhere you look, you’ll find something sweet. Sweets become omnipresent. You must learn to evade them, even if the candy cane calls out your name. Opting for healthier options of snacks is vital for the health of your teeth and gums. Crunchy vegetables are a great alternative to the traditional overly sweet snacks. Try baby carrots or a fruit bowl; you’ll be converted.

Of course, you can’t have holidays without the sugary goodness. So, nibbling on high-in sugar candy or cookies here and there won’t harm your oral health. Your teeth and your pocket will regret anything more than that later. The Christmas stockings you plan on filling with candies, please don’t, for the sake of your teeth.

  • Prefer light-colored drinks over dark.

When you have friends and family over, it doesn’t take much to make a glass of red wine turn into a bottle. When that happens, your pearly whites can become pale pink, and you’ll not be happy about it. Red wine or cranberry juice in the cosmopolitans have their fair share of positives, but too much indulgence in them will stain your teeth.

Opt for white wine instead of red if you want to keep your bright white smile intact after the holiday season. Know the kind of foods and drinks that’ll leave a lasting stain on your teeth, and be wary of them. You can obviously have them but with other foods and drinks, followed by an intensive brushing session later.

  • Make water your constant companion.

Parties, get-togethers, and overnight stays are regular things during this season. You are always going to be surrounded by people, and bad breath will be a non-starter. Water will help you. It aids in digestion and freshens your breath. It also cleans away any new bacteria in your mouth, so you don’t have a sore tooth or more.

There is more. Water can keep you full so that you don’t deviate too much from your diet, and grazing doesn’t remain a concern anymore. Of course, glowy, blemish-free skin is another benefit.

For your teeth, water that has fluoride does wonder. It will keep your teeth strong and healthy throughout the holiday season and beyond.

  • Say hi to your dentist.

Better safe than sorry. That’s what comes to mind when considering dental visits before the holiday season. It will benefit you greatly if you visit your dentist and get all your teeth checked properly. Filling those cavities up before the season officially begins will serve you well. The holidays are usually the busiest time of the year, even for the dentist. So you can get your routine check-up done before the rush hour begins.

And you can also get contact information for emergencies during the holidays. The chances of you using your teeth to do things they are not meant to are high. Opening packaging, cracking nuts, or eating the not-so-soft peanut brittle; all three can chip or, worse, break a tooth. If it happens to you, you need to know exactly who to call, and a pre-holiday dental visit will have you covered.
